From HealthCare.gov to the Battlefield: Lessons Learned Deploying Mission-Critical Healthcare Systems
DevOps in the Federal Government is a different animal. While every large organization has its policies, bureaucracy, and politics, Federal programs take these challenges to the extreme. Having said that, the speakers have been successful in deploying mission-critical healthcare systems within the Federal Government for nearly a decade and seek to share their experiences.Join Jeffery Payne as he discusses and maybe even debates the lessons learned while deploying federal healthcare systems such as HealthCare.gov and operational medical systems that provide care to injured warfighters. Each speaker brings a different perspective to this conversation. Mr. Payne is a consultant whose coaches are often hired by commercial and federal clients to lead change. Mr. Johns is the CTO at a large-scale DoD healthcare organization and leads change from within.Key challenges in achieving continuous delivery in federal organizations will be discussed. Some of these include:* Contractual language and the need for agility + continuity* Desire by some customers to perform redundant testing* Difficulty in getting late lifecycle testing partners to shift left* Trust gaps between product producers and customers* Successfully deploying necessary capabilities beyond software* Lack of modern software knowledge at high levels in agenciesMr. Payne and Mr. Johns are currently working together to transform another DoD healthcare program and will discuss progress on that effort as well.
